How to Keep Aquaponics Water Clear

Cloudy or green water is a common issue in aquaponics systems, especially during the early stages or when systems are exposed to strong sunlight.

Clear water is not just about appearance. It usually indicates better filtration and more stable system conditions.

Green water is typically caused by free-floating algae. This happens when sunlight and excess nutrients allow algae to grow in the water column. The most effective way to reduce this is limiting light exposure to the fish tank. Covering tanks or adding shade can significantly reduce algae growth.

Cloudy or brownish water is often caused by suspended solids such as fish waste or uneaten food. This type of cloudiness usually points to inadequate mechanical filtration.

Swirl filters and radial flow filters are commonly used to remove solids before water reaches the grow beds. These filters slow the water down, allowing heavier particles to settle out.

Overfeeding fish is another major cause of poor water clarity. Feeding only what fish can consume in a few minutes helps reduce waste buildup.

Biological filtration also plays a role. Beneficial bacteria break down waste into nutrients for plants, helping maintain balance in the system.

In most cases, improving filtration, reducing light exposure, and adjusting feeding practices will clear the water over time.
